CP Historical Society 2012 theme to focus on trains

                  The Center Point Historical Society theme for 2012 is called “All Aboard” and features trains and railroading.  New train exhibits will be added to the Waterloo, Cedar Falls & Northern Railroad displays already permanently shown at the Museum.                 The Museum season opens Sunday, May 6, with a program at 2 p.

Prom April 28: Public can view decorations Friday evening

                    The Vinton Skate & Activity Center is once again the site for the annual V/S Prom on Saturday, April 28th.  Director of Prom, Sandy Lyons is pleased to announce that all of the hard work the Juniors and parents have done to decorate the facility is done and they would love to share this with all of you with a public viewing on Friday, April 27th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.

VSHS Book Fair: Buy one, get one free

 "Vinton-Shellsburg High School Library is sponsoring a buy one get one free book fair April 30th thru May 4th.  Hours will be 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the High School LMC.  Come check out what Scholastic has to offer".  

NCCC Fire Team Creates New Life

    By: Justine Miller   Maple 5 arrived in Wapello, Iowa on March 19 with anticipation and a burning desire to put all their training into action with the Louisa County Conservation Board, the Iowa DNR and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.   As the project comes to a close this Friday, the 11-member team is looking at the variety of work accomplished ranging from prescribed burns, trail maintenance and environmental education field trips and lessons.

NCCC Cedar 5 Works In Jackson, Michigan for exciting first project

The team is working on invasive plant species removal and leading classes for local students who visit the camp. This is the team’s first project in their ten month service term with NCCC and it ends on May 11.

Oak 4 Cleans Up Milwaukee Riverfront

     By George Kimball, Oak 4   Oak 4 has been in Milwaukee for the past five weeks helping to preserve native wildlife and performing trail maintenance.  NCCC is partnering with the non-profit community action program, Groundwork Milwaukee, to ensure that Milwaukeeans will be able to enjoy new park trails for years to come.

AmeriCorps NCCC grows with Cedar Rapids

Matthew 25 was created in 2007 to strengthen communities in various ways that will help rebuild Cedar Rapids for the long-term.

Maple 7 leaving its footprint in Youngstown, Ohio

A Maple 7 member helps with landscaping in Youngstown, Ohio.      By: Ashley Carmichael     Since March, Maple 7 has been working with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC) in Youngstown, OH to help develop the Iron Roots Urban Farm. While in town they have also lent a hand at several Community Days, as well as participated in other service projects including an animal baby shower and a Jazz Prevention Health Set.

Another GAP: Maple 6 helping Guadalupe Alternative Programs in St. Paul

Oak 3 started in Vinton before working in SD

On the same day, we made our way to Vinton Parks and Recreation for our 3 day mini-service project. Brian, Dwayne and Allan (staff at Vinton Parks and Recreation) briefed us on how the center acquired the water slide and a gracious Vinton citizen donated the skating rink.
